Wednesday 16th September “Light Fantastic” Dr. Stephen Ashworth
As in the best tradition of Lectures at the Assembly House, learning and entertainment were very ably provided by Dr. Stephen Ashworth from UEA’s Chemistry Department.
Having explained the origin of the word laser; an acronym of Light Amplification Stimulation Emission Radiation , Dr. Ashworth proceeded to explain the sources of light. By means of various apparatus he illustrated the differences between normal light sources such as lamps and candles and a laser which is produced by a machine. Experiments taught us much about the behaviour of light and learnt how lasers are used in our everyday lives. If we listen to a CD a laser is used, if we make a phone call; the use of fibre optic cables involves lasers. They are also used in eye surgery as they can produce a high level of precision. All in all, an interesting and entertaining afternoon which made me for one wish I’d paid more attention in physics lessons.
Thank you, Dr. Ashworth.
