Kett’s Rebellion – Barbara Miller Wednesday 19th August 2009

On a stiflingly hot August afternoon 144 members and visitors listened, with pleasure, to Barbara Miller’s lecture. She did not disappoint. As ever a lively and authoritative  account enthralled, leaving many of us wanting to know more.

As relative newcomers to the City it was fascinating to learn something of its rich and varied history. Causes of the Rebellion, or Commotion as it was known, were many. From fear of changes in agriculture, the gaps in services left by the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the greed of the rich. Robert Kett and his brother held the City from their extensive base on Mousehold Heath. They were eventually defeated by an army of mercenaries led by the Earl of Warwick. The Kett brothers were held in the Tower and were sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered on Tyburn Hill. This changed and Robert was hanged from the battlements of Norwich Castle, William, his brother, from the West tower at Wymondham Abbey. Their bodies were left hanging  for many weeks for the populace to see and note the penalty for Treason.

An interesting and enjoyable afternoon. Thank you.  Jean & Derek Oldham
